I’ve been bullet journaling for a few years now. I love using it as an outlet for my creative side, by including drawings, paintings and doodles. But sometimes I just can’t be bothered. One of the best ways to take a break from creating arty pages in your bullet journal is to use photos, stickers or other ephemera.

One of the best and cheapest options for adding photos to your journal is with a portable thermal printer. Poooliprint have been kind enough to send me one of their printers to review and show you.

Poooliprint Printer

The Poooliprint printer is a thermal printer, meaning it uses thermal paper and heat to print out black and white images.

The Poooliprint arrives packaged in a sturdy little box with small “Quick Start Guide” instruction booklet.  Each Poooliprint printer comes with a little “beak” that magnetically attaches to the printer.  When removed from the printer, it can be used as a small photo holder.  You can choose what colour this comes in.  A roll of thermal paper also comes standard with the printer.

Getting Started

Before you can start printing, you have to plug in the printer to charge which takes about 90 minutes to fully charge.

While you’re waiting for the printer to charge, you will need to download the Poooliprint app to your phone.  The app is needed for you to print your photos or images and is available on both iOs and Android.

The app is super cute and easy to use.  You’ll find within the app the ability to print your own photos directly from the camera roll of your phone.  There are also cute note frames, to-do lists, speech bubbles, cute doodles AND there is also the ability to create text within the app.  But even more than that there is also an option to draw or doodle within the app and print this out.

Unlike other thermal printers, Poooliprint has a multitude of papers available to purchase.  As I said it comes standard with a roll white of thermal paper, but you can also get sticker paper, coloured paper, sticky coloured paper, clear sticker paper, patterned paper and even labels!  There’s something for everyone.  My personal preference is the clear sticker paper.

So now that my little printer has charged, I just connect it to my phone via bluetooth and the app.  From there I can print away.  Here I’ve chosen to print a little calendar for August on clear sticker paper.  When printing, you have the option to choose how the image prints with either Light, Medium or Dark “concentration”.  The Dark option will give you the best results for graphics.  The clear sticker paper is quite thick so you will need scissors to cut your printing rather than tearing it from the printer.

Using a Poooliprint thermal printer, you can add all sorts of designs to your bullet journal pages.  You can also add photos for memory pages or just as extra decorations for your standard spreads.  The printer is also great to create headings for your pages as well!  It really can do a lot more than just print photos!

I really enjoyed using this printer to create these pages.  It saved me a lot of time and as you can see the coloured paper adds a pop of colour to my pages.  The only thing I want to point out is that photos don’t print out as well on the coloured sticker paper as it does on the white or clear paper.

My 2020 Bullet Journal Set Up – Quick, Simple and Easy

A new decade is fast approaching and I’m ready to get back into bullet journaling by setting up my bullet journal for 2020.

Yes, I said “back into bullet journaling”.

I fell off the bujo wagon sometime around July 2019.  I got so involved in creating beautiful spreads for Instagram and YouTube that the enjoyment of creating just disappeared for me.  I totally lost sight of why and how I should be using my bullet journal, which first and foremost should have been as a productivity tool.  Sadly, I think this is a trap that many bullet journalists fall into.

For a month, I was using a super cheap Kikki K diary (super cheap because I bought a 2019 diary in August).  And then I ordered a Hobonichi Weeks.  Which was adorable!  I found a love for cute stickers and sticker kits.

But the last month or so, I started to miss keeping a bullet journal.  And I had an itch to start creating spreads again.  So I’ve set up a brand new bullet journal for 2020.

My 2020 Bullet Journal Set Up

For 2020, I decided to use an Archer and Olive dot grid journal.  It’s just so beautiful with it’s red cloth cover and gold edges, I couldn’t resist.

I’ve also decided that this year, I need to keep it simple.  Just the spreads and collections that I know I will use.  I will only go with a set theme if I feel like it, instead of forcing myself to stick with a theme because that’s what looks good on social media.

I’m also going to try and utilise stamps, stickers and washi tape more in order to make setting up my pages easier.

Year at a Glance

Always useful in any sort of planner or diary is a Year at a Glance, which is just a full calendar.  For the heading I used a Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen.  For the yellow I used a Tombow Dual Brush pen.

Pro Tip:  Make sure you have a calendar handy when you’re writing out your year at a glance, either on your phone or an actual printed calendar.  And make sure you refer to it regularly so that you don’t make mistakes with your dates.  There’s nothing worse than realising you messed up February and all of the following months once you’ve finished!

Next to the Year at a Glance, I added a simple 2020 Cover page to welcome in the new year.  This was created with my favourite Staedtler Pigment liners.  I used a circle stencil to create the curves and a ruler for the straight lines on the numbers.  I then finished off with some Gold Coliro Paint, which has given this a 20s Art Deco vibe.

Bullet Journal Index

I reserved 2 pages for my Index.  And I’ve done nothing fancy with it except add a heading.  My intention is to split each page into two so that I will end up with 4 columns to list my index items.  I’ll add to my Index as I start adding to my bullet journal.

Future Log

My future log, where I’ll do all my future planning i.e. noting down all future events, tasks and appointments, is also simple.

To create these pages, I used Prima Watercolour Confections in Pastel to first lay some colour across the top of the pages.  Once this was dry (you can use a hairdryer to speed up the process), I used some Clear Floral Stickers on top.  Since the stickers are clear, you can see the watercolour underneath and it looks like I drew these flowers myself!

Next I added black boxes using Staedtler Pigment Liners and wrote the months using a White Gelly Roll Pen.  

Pro Tip:  If you intend on laying down black and then writing over the top with a white pen, make sure you use a black pen that isn’t water-based, otherwise the white will just absorb the black colour from underneath.  So avoid using black pens such as the Tombow Dual Brush.

For my future log, I’ve only done 4 pages with 2 months per page.  So in total my future log is only 8 months long.  This is because I don’t expect my notebook to have enough pages for a full year.

Birthday Tracker

Initially I had intended to note birthdays in my future log, but then I realised I didn’t have a full year in my future log, so I’ve created a separate spread to remind me of upcoming birthdays.

The tracker itself is simple.  I divided a page into 12 boxes, one for each month.  But I decided to use the opposite page to practise my lettering and add a quote which signifies that this is a Birthday Tracker.

Personal Goals and Business Goals

These pages may be two of the most important pages in my bullet journal right now.  Here I’ve created areas for my Personal Goals and for my Business Goals.  Each one is divided into 3 sections – to have, to be and to do.

These will be any and all goals I have.  Even the grand “only in my wildest dreams” goals.  I will possibly recreate and update these pages every quarter, or at least halfway through the year.

As with my Future Log, I used watercolour paint to add splotches of colour and then lettered over the top.

Finally, I created a quote page to keep me motivated throughout 2020.  “Don’t stop until you’re proud”.

I used a Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen to create this.

Do you need a Bullet Journal Index? (plus tips and tricks)

A bullet journal index is like a contents page for your bullet journal.  If you follow the traditional method of bullet journaling (bulletjournal.com), you’ll see the index is a permanent fixture in a bullet journal.  But do you really need one in your journal?

What is the Point of an Index?

Although a bullet journal index is like a contents page, it’s not necessarily in chronological order.  The index isn’t static but constantly changes because each time you add to your bullet journal, you should be adding to your index page.

For example, if you add a new collection such as “Books to read” tracker on the next page which happens to be page 21.  You can add to your index:

21             – Books To Read

However, if on page 22 you add another gratitude log, you can add to your index:

10,22       – Gratitude Logs

Because you keep adding various collections to your bullet journal as you go, it’s good to have an index that you can refer to so you can easily find things in your bullet journal.

When I started bullet journaling, I wondered what the point of having an Index was.  My bullet journal is something I almost always carry with me, I refer to it on a daily basis, so I KNOW what is in it and where to find certain collections etc.  The Index seemed like a waste of time.

But now that I’ve got a nice stack of completed notebooks, if I do want to refer back to something in an old bullet journal, the Index is a lifesaver!  It will save you time flipping through pages and pages looking for something in particular, I promise you!

At the end of the day, an index is not crucial to the set up of your bullet journal, it really depends on if you find it useful or not.

How to Create A Bullet Journal Index:

The index page usually appears at the start of your bullet journal and is super easy to set up!

An index usually takes up 2-4 pages in your bullet journal depending on how many pages your journal has, and also how many collections you tend to create.

I always set up 4 pages to be on the safe side.

Creating an index page is as simple as splitting your pages into two columns.  One smaller column for the page numbers, and a larger column for the description of the pages.  Like this:

 

 

Each time you complete a page or collection, you number your page/s and you add this to your index page.

I have to number ALL 200-something pages?

No!  Of course not.  If you journal pages aren’t already numbered, I would number as I go.  Doing it this way rather than numbering all the pages before hand means you still have the ability to rip out pages (god forbid) or stick pages together if you really muck up your pages.  This doesn’t ruin your numbering system.

However you can get some notebooks with the pages already numbered, like the Dingbats*, Leuchtturm or Scribbles That Matter.

How to Organise your Bullet Journal Index:

The index helps you navigate your bullet journal, but at the same time, it can become a loooooong list – I mean, 4 pages long potentially?

This in itself can be hard to read and navigate.

So to get around this, here are some tips and tricks to organise your index so it’s even easier to find things in your bullet journal!

 1.  Colour coding

Highlight items which should be grouped together like how Christina from Square Lime Designs has.  (some great highlighters to try are Frixion Pastel Highlighters – they’re erasable!)

 

 

2. Make certain entries stand out

You can separate each month out by making the months stand out.  For example below, indenting everything other than the month or more important collections so that they stand out:

3.  Separate your Collections pages from your Calendar pages 
 

4.  Only Index your Collections

Some people don’t add their daily and weekly pages to their index, because they are pretty standard in a bullet journal.  Instead, try only indexing important collections, like movie trackers or your cleaning schedule or shopping lists.

This technique not only removes the clutter from your index but it also will reduce the size of your index.

5.  Start your Index at the Back of your Notebook

Ok, sounds weird.  But if you don’t know how many pages you need for your Index (especially if you’ve never had a bullet journal before), starting at the back means you won’t run out of space for you Index as it grows.

6.  Split Your Index Pages Into Two

If you don’t like the idea of having your index at the back of your notebook, but you’re still worried about running out of room.  Then you can save space by splitting your index pages in two.

 
 

7. Categorise Your Index

If the collections and pages in your bullet journal fall into distinct categories, you can group them, like this beautiful example below:

 

 

How to Decorate Your Bullet Journal Index

Just like the rest of your bullet journal, you can decorate your index pages as much or as little as you want.  Here are some examples:

7 Bullet Journal Index tips and tricks to make your life easier!

I love trackers, habit trackers, mood trackers, all of them.  And the ultimate tracker of them all is the Year In Pixels.  I’ve seen these around for a few year now, and until last year, I totally forgot to add them to my annual spreads until half way through January.   Ugh.  

But last year, I managed to remember to add one to my bullet journal set up:

 
 
 

I really loved how it turned out, and I really loved using it…. for the first few months of the year anyway.  I am hopeless at filling in trackers.  But don’t let my lack of follow through stop you!  Find out more and download a free Year in Pixels printable below.

What is a Year In Pixels?

The idea for the Year in Pixels spread was created by Camille from Passion Carnets.  It is in essence, all of your monthly mood trackers lumped into one!  It may seem quite daunting, but if you’re one that likes to fill out a monthly mood tracker then instead of filling out your monthly mood, you fill out your Year in Pixels instead.

The Year in Pixels spread is usually in the form of a grid with one square representing each day of the year.  There will usually be a  colour key with different colours representing different moods.

Now, I know that no-one is just happy or just angry in one day.  But the idea is to select your overall mood for the day and use that to fill in your Year In Pixels.  However, if it is too tough to settle on one, you can split your square in half and fill with colours representing your two main moods for the day.

 

 

How to Create a Year In Pixels?

Creating a year in pixels spread is extremely easy.  And I highly reccommend that you add this spread in the front of your bullet journal as it will be a frequently used page.

Supplies Needed:

 

The simplest form is to draw up a grid of 12 squares across and 31 squares down.

Label the columns with the months, and label the rows with the dates.

 
 
 

Make sure to add a colour key – having 5-7 different moods to track is usually a good place to start.

If you do feel like having only one square per day is not enough for you to capture your moods, you can always add two columns for each month, therefore having 2 squares of moods for each day.  Maybe one for morning, and one for evening?

 
 

 
Why should I create a Year In Pixels?

Being the ultimate mood tracker, a Year In Pixels can really help you focus on the good, and being mindful.  If you know that at the end of the day you have to fill in a little square with your mood, it makes you stop and reflect on how to increase your happiness.

If your day isn’t going to plan, can you do something little to make it better?  Stop and go for a walk, play with your children, or grab a coffee with a friend?

By filling in those little squares you can stop to reflect on what made you feel the way you did today.  Were you angry because of work again, is this something that occurs often?  If so, maybe it’s time to look at making a change.

 
What if you had a great day? What made it so great? Can you make an effort to do more of that?

 

 

Should I include a Year In Pixels?

There are pros and cons to having a Year in Pixels spread in your bullet journal. Personally, I love the idea of a Year in Pixels and I can see how it can really help my mindfulness. I added one in my journal for last year, but I’m not one that easily sticks to filling in trackers, so after 3 months, I kept forgetting to fill it in. I now have a mostly empty spread!

Pros:

  • you don’t need to make a monthly mood tracker
  • it’s a great overview of your mood and happiness for the year
  • it looks super pretty when filled in
  • the feeling of achievement is IMMENSE when you’ve totally filled in your Year In Pixels

Cons:

  • If you aren’t great at filling in trackers (like me!), then it can be super hard keeping up with filling this in every single day.
  • If you go through more than one journal a year, you’ll have to keep going back to your original notebook to fill it in towards the end of the year.
  • there is a high chance of this spread being uncompleted so don’t start if you hate unfinished spreads!

The 5 Main Spreads to Include in your Bullet Journal

5 Main spreads to include in your bullet journal

Right so, you’ve decided to start a bullet journal.  You’ve spent hours researching your supplies, spent more hours deciding on what notebook to buy, then patiently waited by the mailbox for it all to get to you.  But now what?

Yip, it’s super daunting, when you search “how do I start a bullet journal” and you get bombarded with jargon and images of beautiful works of art and you just want to know what the hell do I put on the first page?!

Ok, so well, that first question is easy.  Make sure you put your name on that first page, if there’s a “this book belongs to….”, then use it, add in your phone number as well.  Because I can guarantee that you are going to get attached to this notebook and if you lose it, you want every chance you have of getting it back.

But what comes after that?  

Here are the 5 main spreads you should have in your bullet journal:

#1 – Bullet Journal Index

A bullet journal index is like a contents page.  This is where you reference in all those collections you add to your bullet journal.  And by collections, I mean your monthly logs, daily logs, book trackers, movie trackers, cleaning schedules, recipes… everything that you’ve decided to add to your bullet journal

From my experience, leaving 2 – 4 pages for an index is enough.  If you want to reference in every single page you have in your notebook, you’ll need to adjust the number of pages you leave blank.

Then simply create a small column on the left for the page numbers, with a wider column to the right (on each page) for the description of the page.  Or switch around the columns is that’s your preference.

If you’re lucky, some notebooks have pre-printed indices in them, such as the Scribbles That Matter or Dingbats* notebooks.

#2 – Bullet Journal Key

No, not an actual key – are you now thinking about those lockable diaries you used to have as a kid?

A bullet journal key is simply a list of all those symbols you use within your bullet journal to save on time and having to write to much.  This forms a part of Rapid Logging in the bullet journal system.

Now those symbols are technically referred to as signifiers.  They add extra information and context to your journal without having to write too much and are usually used over and over.

For example, a task that needs to be completed can be signified as a “•”

So each time you have a new task to be completed, list it by using the “•” in front.  

Once you’ve finished the task, place an “✘” through it.  The “✘” now becomes the signifier for a completed task.

 

Just remember, you don’t have to use the same signifiers as everyone else. You can decide which ones suit your needs the best and use those.

 

You can also decorate your bullet journal Key page however you want.

 

If you’re into colours, you can also include a colour code in your bullet journal key as well, such as these ones:

 

 

 

#3 – Future Log

What is a Future Log?

A future log is a spread that aids in your long term planning.  For instance, if you’ve been invited to a wedding in 6 months time, the Future Log is where you’d write this down.

In general, a future log will encompass a full year in advance.  However, some people don’t plan out that far ahead, or their bullet journals don’t last that long, so it’s ok to have only 9 months or 6 months in your bullet journal.  The choice is up to you.

Here are some cute ways of setting up a Future Log in your bullet journal:

This future log has 3 columns per page, each column topped with the monthly calendar. Any important dates will be listed underneath with a description.

 

Here’s an option if you want to capture all 12 months on a two-page spread:

 

Or go with a horizontal layout:

 

 

 

Now if you’ve been invited to a shotgun wedding that is happening next month (yeah these things do happen!), then this wouldn’t go in your Future log.  It would go in your Monthly Log, which we’ll look at next.

 

#4 – Monthly Log

So now that you’ve got your long term planning sorted, it’s time to look at what is coming up in the next month of your life!  The bullet journal monthly log is where you keep all the appointments, tasks, reminders that you need for the coming month.  

The original monthly log from the bullet journal system is as simple as writing the month at the top of the page and then writing the day and dates in a column down the left hand side of the page.  Appointments, tasks and reminders etc are written down next to the corresponding date.  So you can quickly see at a glance what you have on for the coming month.

In this simple monthly log, I’ve highlighted the weekends to make it even easier to read.

 

 

Other examples of monthly logs generally come in the form of a calendar format, and these are much like the monthly pages that you’ll find in a standard pre-printed planner.  You can create this on one page or use two side by side pages.  It depends on how much space you like to use.  

 

 

Make sure to add in your goals or tasks that aren’t date specific but are items that you want to achieve in this month.  And also don’t forget to refer back to your Future Log and transfer any items for the month from there.

 

You can mix things up a bit by creating a horizontal monthly log. But be warned, this type of layout is not for someone who has a lot going on!

 

 

#5 – Daily Log

The daily log is where you get down to the nitty-gritty of your daily life.  Here is where you write down your to-do list for the day.  Highlight any important tasks or events.  And it’s also where you can write notes or comments about your day or mood, meal plan, meal log.  Basically, anything that can and will happen in your day.

The simplest form of a daily log is to create a heading using the date. Then start rapid logging (list your tasks, notes, events). Once the day is complete, repeat again for the next day.

 

 

The daily log forms part of the original bullet journal method.  But it has evolved in the last few years to become part of the Weekly Log.

Weekly Log

 

A weekly log, as the name suggests is much like the Monthly log except it only focuses on the current week.  Usually on the weekend preceding the week in question, you would sit down and create a weekly log.  Or if life has been hectic first thing on Monday morning.  (Ok, ok, I’ve sometimes not got round to creating my weekly log until Tuesday or Wednesday).  

I almost always use a weekly log in my bullet journal, as this gives me an overview of how my week is looking.  A quick glance at my weekly log can show me when swimming lessons are on, when to bake for the school fair, who’s birthday party I need to herd my kids too….  which helps me plan out the rest of the week.

Usually a weekly log is created over two side by side pages.  With set spaces for each of the days of the week.  Weekly logs can be as simple or as complicated as you wish.  Some people like to add meal planners, habit trackers, mood trackers, weather trackers and all sorts of other bits and pieces.

So there you have it!  Once you have these 5 bullet journal spreads set up in your bullet journal, you’re basically a pro!

Valentine’s Day.  You either love it or you hate it.

Ok, so maybe it’s not that easy.  I hate it because it’s just so commercialised.  The price of roses (and flowers) go up 1000%, chocolates are also overpriced, discount vouchers are not valid at restaurants!  And my husband shouldn’t be told that he can only show his love for me on this specific day.   He can show me all the other 364 days as well!  😂

But, I also love Valentine’s Day.  I’m a girly-girl at heart.  I love pink, I love hearts, I love flowers!  And I’m not going to say no to receiving flowers and chocolates either!  I have such mixed feelings about this day!

My 2019 Bullet Journal Set-up

A new year means for most, a new journal.  Usually I don’t start a new notebook until I’ve completed my current one.  But this year, I decided to move on to a new bullet journal for 2019.

The reason I’m doing this is because I probably only have enough pages in my current Archer and Olive Notebook for one more month.  So I might as well set up a whole new year now, instead of delaying it a month.
